Like many things in life, minor issues left untreated lead to major issues. Your roof is no different. Small damages to your roof over time can lead to expensive repair costs and significant damage to your home.

However, most homeowners don’t know what to look for in terms of roof damage. That’s what we’re here to change. By learning how to spot roof damage before it becomes critical, you can save yourself a substantial amount of time and money.

Keep reading for the five most common signs of roof damage.

1. Granules in Your Gutter

It’s recommended that you clean your gutters about four times a year, roughly once per season. This is important to ensure water flows away from your house during rainfall, snowmelt, etc. However, checking your gutters can also be an effective way of spotting roof damage.

If you have an excessive amount of granules in your gutter, odds are your roof is suffering. The granules come from asphalt shingles, which wear down over time from weather conditions (wind, rain, snow, ice, heat, etc.)

2. Damaged or Discolored Shingles

Aside from shedding their granules, your shingles have other ways of telling you they need help. In the intense sunlight, shingles can curl and crack. Alternatively, if shingles are absorbing water rather than wicking it away, they may appear dark or discolored.

These are all significant signs of roof damage that require immediate repairs.

3. Extreme Weather Conditions

As we mentioned above, all kinds of weather can lead to roof damage. However, it’s important to check your roof for signs of damage after extreme acute weather conditions. This includes hail storms, high winds, and long icy winters.

4. Water Leaks

Unfortunately, one of the most telling signs of roof damage is also one of the most destructive. If you find evidence of water leaks in your home, particularly in the attic or on the top floor, you likely need your roof repaired.

Pay attention to the coloring of the walls and ceiling near the roof. You’ll notice discoloration and or water staining. However, you may also want to check the possessions you store in the attic for alternative signs of water damage. Finally, check for mold in these areas, especially in areas with low light and little airflow.

5. Visible Light Through the Attic Ceiling

Finally, if you have access to your attic, look up through the ceiling boards on a sunny day. If you have severe roof damage, you may be able to see light shining through. This is a huge indication that immediate repairs are needed – if light can get through, so can water and insects.

Do You Have Roof Damage?

We can’t express enough how important it is for you to take care of roof damage as quickly as possible. If you’re worried about funding, check with your insurance company about what damages and repairs they cover. The problem is, the longer you leave roof issues, the worse the damage and costs will be.
